DJs, What Not To Wear At Weddings

by Dave Evans on August 11, 2010

It’s not often I get a weekend off, but I recently went to friend’s wedding at a local hotel of reasonable standard (Marriott).

Everyone was dressed to the nines, the Bride and Groom looked fabulous… and then I noticed the DJ.

He was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans with ripped knees (intentional or not I don’t know). Now, normally as a punter I wouldn’t care, but as a DJ myself I thought it was completely improper attire for:

a)  A wedding
b)  A gig at a fairly reasonable hotel

Regardless of the function, I have always worn shirt and trousers when working in hotels or on the mobile circuit. More often than not I will be in a complete suit.

I would also ask an agent I may get work through if an event is black tie and dress accordingly if so, as I feel it projects a professional image.

I have a day job working in business and I certainly wouldn’t wear ripped jeans for that job, so why would I for DJ’ing if the event calls for it? (and a wedding certainly does). I understand that if you have to rig up then you don’t want to get mucky but there is nothing stopping you taking an outfit to get changed into after the gig.

I appreciate that in town centre pubs and clubs the days of people going out in smart shirts and trousers is over and when I work at my pub I will wear jeans and a smart but casual top, as it wouldn’t be appropriate to be in a suit for that audience.

But I have seen other DJ’s before in attire I would not consider “professional” in appearance for the event. So I would ask my fellow DJ’s what you consider acceptable and what you wear for your functions?

And what about female DJs – what attire are they expected to be in at a formal function, especially a Black Tie one?! It’s always a difficult call, as a cocktail dress just isn’t practical (!) but a smart suit on a lady might look a little out of place at such an event… You men have it easy in comparison!

I’ll go along with the smart or smart casual look for most Receptions , however I am doing one in 2 weeks time in smart shorts & Hawaiian shirt ( I ‘ve met the couple before & they said they’d like a party atmosphere !!! ). I’m sure there will be some funny looks from the more senior guests so I may have to use 2 outfits ( change when the alcohol intake – theirs, not mine! – has softened the mood somewhat !! I’ll let you know how I got on. Mark ( Red Dragon ).
