Celebrity Status!

by Helen Lee on August 2, 2011

A few weeks ago, we asked the members of our Facebook Page if they had any good DJ stories to share with us in our blog!

Jacob Quelch rose to the challenge and sent us this story, about dealing with ‘celebrity status’ at his regular gig:

I have a regular gig in a popular club in Devon on Saturday nights.

We have a certain female popstar whose boyfriend has a house in the area and so usually every August she will stay in the area.

Last August, she came into the club with a few of her friends and it was just beforehand that I heard stories about previous problems with some of her ‘entourage’.

Now the girl herself,  who is quite a famous celebrity, was absolutely no trouble at all, however I had to deal with one of her friends.

The friend basically came up to me, asking for every song under the sun but stating that they were for her friend (she couldn’t say it enough that she was her friend!). She then actually asked me if I knew who she was!!!

Eventually she went away but was then on the dancefloor in front of me, whilst pointing out to me (like an Air Stewardess showing emergency exits!) that this popstar in question was on the dancefloor too.

Several minutes later, this person has come back again and generally being a nuisance and asking to play songs that I wouldn’t normally play in any circumstance. Nothing too extreme but as a DJ I just knew it wouldn’t work!

So then I get the women re-iterating again that she’s this popstar’s friend and then also saying it was her birthday yesterday and she really wants me to play this song for her.

Anyone who’s DJ-ed will tell you how much we hear the “It’s my birthday” excuse and I’ll try to catch them out by asking their star sign.

I fobbed the friend off yet again and thought to myself “XX’s birthday yesterday? Yeh, ok!” Went onto Wikipedia to look it up……………………….

…….Ah yes, it was yesterday. OK, I chose not to see that! :) lol

(I’ve chosen not to mention the celebrity’s name, as she comes in the club quite often and is always really nice to me!)
