Everything You Need To Know About DJing & Success

by Richard Lee on January 25, 2012

Danny Rampling has been one of the world’s leading DJs/Producers for over 20 years. His pioneering DJ technique introduced new and exciting music styles to a global audience which included a hugely successful stint on national BBC Radio One.

In 2008, Danny published his book ‘Everything You Need To Know About DJing & Success’ and I have recently had the pleasure of reading it and thought I would share my views with you.

My initial comment is that this is not one of those flimsy affairs that is full of pointless drivel and dodgy photos to pad it out. This is a serious publication, presented in a hardback sleeve and weighing a good few pounds…always a good start if the overall presentation is excellent!

Danny made his name as a dance music DJ but that shouldn’t put other DJs off reading this book. Danny uses his 20 years of experience to share tips & techniques to improve your DJing and business skills.

Whether you are a mobile, club, radio or bedroom DJ then this book is an essential read if you wish to further your DJing. From buying your music to setting up equipment, beat mixing to promotion and even finance & tax are all covered in an interesting and precise way.

Many DJs are constantly looking at new and innovative ways to expand their business and this book gives you all the tools you need in order to make that happen.

Not only has Danny shared every last piece of his experience but he has also included numerous websites and contacts in his book. This type of information is invaluable and worth its weight in gold. Instead of spending hours, perhaps even days, trying to locate the best contacts and websites to increase your business, you have everything done for you and set out for easy reference.

Danny doesn’t preach in his book…far from it! He comes across as very humble man. A man who is content with his success and willing to share it with others so they may also benefit from his vast knowledge.

I personally enjoyed the sections on mixing techniques, promotion, radio and Danny’s personal tips for achieving potential and succeeding in life…very inspirational.

Add to this the bonus sections that include information on building your own website, several definitive music listings and a free dvd featuring, amongst others, David Morales & Pete Tong and you have a brilliant piece of work that every DJ serious about their work should have on their book shelf.

If you take only one piece of advice from this book then trust me when I tell you it will change your approach to your trade for ever and enrich your life immensely.

Happy reading!

The silly season is almost upon us and as DJs it is time to prepare for one of the busiest times of working year. Many DJs will enjoy increased amounts of work as venues cram punters in on any night, and some afternoons, of the week. The average DJ will probably be working between 15-20 [...]

This blog is dedicated to the memory of Sir Jimmy Savile who passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on the 29th October 2011.
I suppose I first found out about Jimmy Savile the same way as most DJ’s and people around my age (40) when I used to watch Jim’ll Fix It on BBC1 [...]

Earlier in the summer I did a blog about noise levels when doing outdoor parties but for this one I will look at setting the appropriate levels for indoor functions of different types.
Now I’m not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs here but I’ve been to functions where it is obvious that the DJ [...]

I work on matchdays at Rotherham United and also host all their functions, but recently I was asked to host an ‘End of Season Awards’ night for another local football club.
